Autor de uma obra plural e multifacetada, Darcy Ribeiro tornou-se um dos mais expressivos antropólogos brasileiros e, certamente, um ícone de uma geração de intelectuais que buscou reinterpretar e imaginar novamente o Brasil, compreendendo os fracassos e sucessos de nossa formação histórica e cultural. Em meio aos seus muitos en-saios teóricos e narrativas antropológicas fortemente marcadas pela sua ex-periência prática, emergem, com força ímpar, de sua obra, os romances Maíra (1976), O mulo (1981) e Utopia selva-gem (1982), nos quais as identidades do povo brasileiro são fartamente discutidas, temperadas obviamente pela linguagem, ao mesmo tempo poética edespojada, das populações de um país ainda em formação, “na dura busca de seu destino”.
