Abstract

O artigo discute aspectos da história ambiental tendo como cenário as florestas do oeste de Santa Catarina. A migração de descendentes de italianos e alemães, oriundos do Rio Grande do Sul no século XX provocou alterações profundas na paisagem, onde as florestas sucumbiram abrindo lugar à agricultura. A ação das companhias colonizadoras está diretamente ligada a esse processo, pois trouxeram consigo as serrarias, que visavam principalmente a lucros, sem preocupações com reflorestamento. Hoje resta muito pouco das florestas de araucária e da estacional decidual, e o nosso compromisso como historiadores é o de escrever esta história, de que a natureza não é um bem infinito e precisa ser preservada.
