Abstract

Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome is an idiopathic disease, characteri- zed by one or more of the following factors: recurrent facial swelling that causes gradual enhancing of the involved soft tissues, recurrent facial palsy and lingua plicata. The manifestation onset usually occurs in childhood and recurrence is common. Suggested treatments are empiric and include the use of antibiotics, corticostheroids, surgical excision of scary tissue and nerve decompression. This paper presents the clinical charac- teristics, diagnosis and treatment means to the pathology and a cli- nical report followed-up at the De- partment of Maxillofacial Surgery at Complexo Hospitalar Santa Casa, since 2000. A male patient presented the triad of the disease and was believed to be harbouring a neoplasia. The patient presented an improvement with treatment using clofazamine.
