Abstract

The aim of this study was to inves- tigate the periodontal conditions in irradiated and non-irradiated patients for oncology therapy in the city of São Luís-MA-BR. The research had a sample of 92 pa- tients: 46 irradiated (test group) and 46 non-irradiated (control group). It was collected informa- tion about salivary conditions and it was used the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN), during the cli- nical examination. The collected data were tabulated and analyzed by Qui-square Test at a 5% level of significance. It was observed irra- diated patients presented higher frequency of xerostomia than the non-irradiated ones, with statisti- cally significant differences. The X code was the most frequent in both groups, with no statistically significant difference in the perio- dontal conditions and periodontal treatment needs. From these ob- servations, the conclusion is that irradiated patients presented higher frequency of xerostomia frequency and no significant di- fference in periodontal conditions and treatment needs in relation to non-irradiated patients. Key words: periodontics, neo- plasm, radiotherapy.
