Abstract

The English language is currently the main language of communication worldwide. In the most diverse areas of study, research has been recorded in English in order to provide greater access to these documents and facilitate the dissemination of this knowledge. The use of the English language as the main means of scientific communication is one of the main points that demonstrate the importance of mastering the language for professionals working in the health field, especially dentistry - an area in constant evolution as a result of growing scientific and technological. It is known that teaching English as a curricular subject in undergraduate dentistry courses in public institutions is not yet a reality. Objectives: The objective of this work was to carry out a bibliographical research on the importance of knowing the English language for undergraduate students, especially in dentistry. Literature review: The review highlighted the relevance of studying the English language, as knowing the language provides an instrument for inserting and discovering knowledge for students. The inclusion of the study of English in undergraduate Dentistry curricula is probably significant in favoring the production of knowledge in different areas, in addition to being able to act as an enrichment factor for the professional training of Dental Surgeons. Final considerations: In this sense, the study presented can serve as a subsidy and contribute to the evaluation and decision-making process for undergraduate course coordinators to include English language teaching in their curricula.
