Abstract

Introduction: Anxiety is an emotional experience related to the anticipation of future situations perceived by the individual as unpleasant. Health science students represent a specific group exposed to a high emotional burden, which creates space for the emergence of other conditions such as anxiety and temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Objectives: To investigate the association between the severity of temporomandibular disorder and trait-state anxiety levels among Dentistry students. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive study with a quantitative approach, using a non-probabilistic convenience sample composed of 101 Dentistry students. To assess the signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder and anxiety, the Fonseca Anamnestic Index and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were used, respectively. Data were recorded, tabulated, and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. For the descriptive procedures, frequencies and percentages were presented; for inferential procedures, Chi-square, Fisher's exact test, and Student's t-test for numerical data were used. A significance level of p < 0.05 was considered. Results: No significant association was observed between the severity of TMD and trait anxiety levels (p = 0.143). However, a significant association was found between the severity of TMD and state anxiety levels (p = 0.006). Conclusion: The results demonstrated a significant association between the severity of TMD and state anxiety levels, indicating that more severe cases of the disorder may be linked to higher levels of situational anxiety among Dentistry students.
