L’Italia dopo l’unifi cazione: problemi e limiti di una “potenza minore”

Il saggio analizza la storia italiana successiva all’unificazione (1861) soffermandosi su due problemi. Il primo è la Questione romana, cioè il conflitto che divise l’Italia e la Santa Sede fino ai Patti lateranensi del 1929, con pesanti conseguenze di carattere sia interno sia internazionale. Il secondo è l’incerta politica estera condotta da tutti i governi del paese fino al fascismo, tra desiderio di grandezza, oscillazioni di linea, scelte non deguatamente ponderate. Queste incertezze resero debole e poco credibile la posizione internazionale dell’Italia fino al secondo dopoguerra quando,con l’adesione al blocco occidentale e l’avvio dell’integrazione europea, l’Italia ha assunto finalmente una posizione chiara e coerente.
