In the historical vision of Clement Greenberg, modernism is characterized by the “purism”, that is, by the refusal of contaminating agents in the constitution of specific forms of art. Kitsch, on the other hand, represents all the elements refused by the modernist option. Based on this situation, the study briefly examines the history of kitsch, since its appearance in the “shop windows” (19th century), highlighting its sentimental effects. The argument hypothesis is that both kitsch and sentimentality represent blind spots of the modernist project in understanding the complexity of the human being.
