Abstract

This article seeks to establish a relationship between the epistemological and political dimensions of Thomas Hobbes's work, focusing in particular on the development of a theory of discourse and language in the early part of Leviathan, and the connection of this theory of discourse and language with Hobbesian politics and eschatology. At the end of the paper I intend to demonstrate that notwithstanding the incompatibility of Hobbes's guiding thesis with contemporary political liberalism, we can identify in the author's work two fundamental theses on legitimacy and representation that continue to guide demands for inclusion and equality in contemporary and liberal societies.
