Modernization, development and dependency in Brazil-United States relations during the Cold War:
a debate through the Alliance for Progress (1961-1964)

This article examines the Alliance for Progress as a bridge to paternalistic and dependent relations between the United States and Brazil. Under the veil of the promise of development and modernization, the program advocated strengthening the link between the rapidly expanding US liberal capitalist model and the economies of Latin American countries. Our examination focuses on the program's performance in the Brazilian Northeast, a region where a relatively cohesive and conservative political bloc intended to strengthen dependence on Brazil as a mechanism to maintain its power structures.
