The election of writer, philosopher, and activist Ailton Krenak to the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL) in April 2024 symbolically marked a fissure in Brazilian colonial structures, since it officially recognized the indigenous Brazilian epistemology – the knowledge, understanding, and social experiences of the original groups – as a valid way of conceiving and experiencing the world. Thus, this article aims to reflect on how Ailton Krenak's epistemological reflections, reinforced by decolonial and postcolonial perspectives that establish a critique of modernity and its by-products, have historically contributed to the understanding of current climate emergences, responsible for putting the world on alert. On the other hand, we intend to reflect on how the production of historical knowledge can benefit from interactions with non-Westernizing epistemologies, decolonizing History by including new actors, new worldviews and new narratives that see man's relationship with nature differently.
