Abstract

The work that will be developed seeks to address, however without undue delay, the official trip made by the then President of the Republic, João Goulart, to the President of the United States, John Kennedy, in April 1962. The article has as its background the Independent Foreign Policy, as well as the domestic political dissident, in clear counterpoint to the ideologies of the Western bloc led by the United States in the context of the Cold War. For analysis, the transcription of the speeches and conversations between the two statesmen is used, as well as the publications of the newspaper Última Hora, which provides the repercussion of the trip, within the oscillations of the Brazilian collectivity. The paper also aims to verify the reasons for the trip and the final balance, when the president returns, weighing the importance of the event to the popularity of the government.
