Abstract

History is shaped by human action over time and within the context of social space. This action, although intrinsically individual, often transcends the personal domain and shapes society in different ways. History teaching can be approached from two different perspectives: the traditional one, which is more limited in scope, and the broadening one, which is more inclusive in nature. Regardless of the approach, it is imperative that there is historical awareness in every individual. This awareness implies a critical reflection on the time lived and an understanding of its historical significance, which is achieved by identifying the relevant cultural elements and their influence in shaping the present. The primary purpose of teaching history lies in establishing a substantive connection between contemporary daily life and the historicized past. It is essential to preserve the integrity and quality of the historical content adopted and used, as well as sustaining the pedagogical and ethical responsibility of educators and students, both in relation to themselves and to society. In this way, history teaching is established not only as a profession, but also as a mission.
