This article aims to present the process of the journal “Black Science in Schools: A Scientific Dissemination Journal for Children”, as well as the motivations for it. The proposal was designed, in accordance with law 10.639/03, to include Afro-Brazilian History and Culture in the school science curriculum for the initial years of elementary school. In order to understand and overcome the challenges of the intersection between the ethnic-racial theme and science teaching, a survey was conducted with 85 basic education teachers. The results indicate a scarcity of adequate didactic material, a lack of repertoire for the construction of activities, and resistance to the theme as obstacles for the ethnic-racial theme to be addressed in basic education. The pedagogical strategies, present in the journal and presented in this article signal the relevance of Afro-referenced didactic material as a pedagogical resource to value Afro culture in science teaching.
