Political and social challenges of democratic constitucionalism in Brazil

The purpose of this article is to analyze democratic constitutionalism to, afterwards, establish a parallel with Brazilian history. By a careful review of literature, first, the article approaches the rise of constitutionalism and your nuances, focusing to the main liberal revolutions of eighteenth century that underpinned the constitutional ideal. The article approaches the democratic regime pointing out some of its characteristics and the limitations in establishing a meaning for this concept. Finally, looking toward brazilian history, it is verified that our republic was built without popular participation, and this is one of the great brazilian challenges for this new century: to enter in the engine room of the Constitution to guarantee the satisfaction of the rights established in this normative document.
