Representation of teachers in the bilingual education for deaf people

The aim of this study is to investigate the representations of the teacher of bilingual education for the deaf expressed in the guidelines section of the teacher's book Portuguese for deaf children: reading and writing in everyday life, by Silva and Guimarães. The interpretative and qualitative study of this textbook is based on the Bakhtin Circle's dialogical perspective of language and establishes dialogues with works that discuss issues related to bilingual education for the deaf. The results of the discursive analysis undertaken point to a set of representations that outline a profile of a teaching professional who is well-informed about the latest developments in language studies and the field of bilingual education, as well as the guidelines of specific legislation. These results give rise to discussions and reflections on the relationship between textbooks and deaf education from a bilingual perspective, as well as on teacher training in the context of teaching Portuguese as a second language for deaf people.
