Scientific communication brings academic knowledge closer to society and promotes critical thinking, social inclusion, and access to science as a public good. In Maranhão, this practice becomes particularly relevant in the face of persistent inequalities in access to scientific information. This article presents, based on an Experience Report supported by a Descriptive Case Study, an analysis of the actions of the Ilha da Ciência Laboratory at the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA). The study draws on document analysis, direct observation, and records produced throughout extension activities to examine the laboratory’s role in expanding scientific culture in the state. Since 2007, the laboratory has developed science fairs, workshops, science clubs, and mobile activities in both formal and non-formal educational settings, engaging children, youth, and basic education teachers, especially in socially vulnerable contexts. The results indicate that the laboratory connects the university with local communities, strengthens youth protagonism, and contributes to the development of a scientific culture in Maranhão, consolidating itself as an agent of social transformation.
