This research aimed to discuss the importance of indigenous peoples in sustainable regional development, based on Elinor Ostrom's principles of governance of the commons. The general objective was to explore how these principles can be applied to strengthen the management practices of indigenous communities, considering the relationship between natural resource preservation and contemporary challenges. Specific objectives were established to analyze the theory of common goods and the Tragedy of the Commons, evaluate the principles of governance of common resources, investigate the governance of indigenous peoples in the search for sustainable development and examine the role of Indigenous Lands in environmental preservation . The methodology adopted was based on qualitative, explanatory research, and was supported by bibliographical sources and legal documents. Previous results indicated that Indigenous Peoples play a vital role in environmental preservation, ensuring the reduction of deforestation and CO2 emissions.
