At any given moment, it is witnessed both the discovery of new diseases, and, simultaneously, a frailty in maintaining the population´s health. The world is stunned before the COVID-19 pandemic which scourges the planet. These are important aspects since patients are asking more and more questions. It is paramount to underscore that patients have the right of knowing and participating of the planning and care, from identifying the disease - which fosters an engagement to promote and maintain health - up to the admittances, whenever necessary. This paper is the brainchild of research activities based upon empirical elements experienced by the authors, within the context of health and spirituality. It is necessary to understand the aspects of both biopolitics and the reflexions of self and autonomy by Paulo Freire, in order to lead to pondering about how to bridge communication gaps between healthcare professionals and patients. Such topic takes great relevance in the discussion of maintaining healthcare and the importance of respecting one´s uniqueness in an opinion.
