The article brings the results of a study that aimed to understand how the process of transition from kindergarten to elementary school occurs, from the children's perspective. This is a field research carried out in a public school in the city of Natal/RN, at the beginning of the school year. Systematic observations were made during the reception period of the children in the 1st year and two semi-structured interviews, individual and collective, with 6 (six) children. Authors such as Neves (2010), Faria (2012), Martinati (2012), Motta (2013), Ribeiro (2014) and Paulino and Queiroz (2018) deal with this transition process and corroborate the theoretical discussion. The study showed the children's feelings of fear and insecurity, as well as feelings of euphoria when entering the 1st year, the absence of the games they play in kindergarten, and the discouragement when performing repetitive and meaningless activities.
